Oh yeah lol. I think that's what they were aiming for. I agree that the plot holes are enormous gaping holes and nothing makes much sense lol.
I think of it as just pure drama, sort of like how those Shakespearean plays aren't supposed to be realistic.
Also everyone in France had British accents and spoke English, while singing every single conversation lol.
