In Buddhism, isn't there something called intent? It's different than hope. The intent to change somehow however subtle the external (and internal) circumstance. It is difficult, I think because it is involved with working with present conditions. Which often suck. And I don't think it works like I'm setting my intent to get that white Lexus with the sun roof and gold rims. I think intent is more a crap shoot. Meaning contentment might come in an unexpected form.
