i had all IBM , HP and Lenovo/IBM

ibm x40 with win xp, not widescreen: very good quality of keyboard, hinge, very stabil, it still works but because the x40 laptop is old after service pack 3 the laptop is just too slow.
I had a harddisk with everything installed and the useful recovery environment.

hp 5910p widescreen vista: also good solid like the lenovo, ordered the laptop without any operating system because I had the nerve to install everything myself. But that was not a good idea because this was very time consuming. Interestingly the accumulator (battery) didn't work first, after speaking with the customer service they sent one within 14 days. Then it worked.

x61s win xp sp3 no widescreen: because I liked the old x40 that still works but too slow I bought a x61s (slow voltage). Its approx. the same like x40 but with updated hardware. Is very fast with xp sp3 now.
x61s is no widescreen which I like and is very portable. With memorized key shortcuts and adjustements it can be possible to work confortable with smaller screens. Or it can be installed add-ins like littlefox, littlebird to have more screen space. If necessary the laptop can be connected to a big screen monitor.

vista is of no benefit over xp, its only the question how long xp is supported with drivers for devices.

the security, wireless and recovery possibilities are good. non widescreen is still available what I like. Never had hardware problems so far.

I would go with Lenovo.

There might be some spelling mistakes, sorry for that I am busy...

Hope this experience helps.

I know mac too, but I grow up with windows in secondary school (8086,286 CPU...) and I sometimes use all of these practical, free applications like Irfanview, paint.net, freecommander, ccleaner, VLC mediaplayer, Mozilla thunderbird, firefox, mozbackup.

sorry the long post I am also exercising with the little more smaller keyboard of x61s compared with the old x40.

I bought the x61s over ebay.com
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/AIT-Systems__W0QQ_armrsZ1

no problem with those guys, they also installed software on request and did some adjustments on demand costless.

Buying computer hardware isn't a good investment, amortization faster than cars.

warm regards
