In reply to Cosmetics What do you make of this ???, posted by Phillipa on July 17, 2008, at 12:11:51

Phillipa,

As you probably know, my daughter has Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. Also sometimes called environmental illness (not to be confused with allergies to cats, grass, etc).

I believe that there are many, many harmful ingredients in every day products.

Once a friend had a severe reaction after cleaning a shower with Tilex Spray. The doctor at Emergency Dept of Hospital asked what she'd been using; shook his head & said that there were SO many products on store shelves that should definitely NOT be there that he found it hard to believe. He told her that NObody should use Tilex if they value their health.

Anything we put on our skin is absorbed. I guess some countries have "safety" regulations & limits.

I don't have much enery lately, but after hearing something about LEAD in lipsticks, I phoned the "Avon" lady who I buy mascara from. I asked her to please check for me if Avon lipsticks have lead in them. I thought I'd like to find a lipstick that did not have ANY lead in it & asked her to find out if any of hers did.

She got back to me & said that lead as an ingredient isn't listed because it's in some of their lipsticks in such small amounts & that the amount is WITHIN the Canadian limits.

I find it disgusting that the government deems there to be an OKAY amount of lead in a product that is intended to be smeared on ones skin!

But what do I know, right? I guess I know that Lead going into our bodies is NOT a wonderful idea.

So basically, I think it's 'buyer beware' & I definitely believe that some cosmetics probably have things in them that we don't want to know about.

I believe that some "plumping" skin products have ingredients that cause swelling. Once, before I knew about this stuff, I bought some skin cream that was supposed to plump out 'lines' or wrinkles. The directions said apply up to 3 times a day. On thinking about it, I realized that was probably so that the skin would keep swelling & one would think that the lines & wrinkles were actually disappearing.

Sigh.

Kath
