Primo Levi had a different line, although he may have been depressed (whatever that is) when he wrote it. It was 'the best all died, the worst survived'.
(Nice and cheery. Still, he's a wonderful writer.)There are assumptions embeded in our culture that it is hard to think outside of. Some that come to mind involve choice, autonomy, and the meaning (or lack therof) of history.
