Other Favorites -- bands? Books? Banned books?

I've been meandering down Memory Lane this week, and reminding myself of some of my old favorite bands. How about we move on from foods to favorite bands or favorite songs?

(As for books, all I can say is that I just finished a trilogy that was pretty fabulous -- the Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud. It's kids books, but I think better than Harry Potter -- up there with "His Dark Materials," in my not at all humble opinion. The Bartimaeus books are "The Amulet of Samarkand," "The Golem's Eye," and "The Gate of Ptolemy." I recommend them to anyone who likes kids books with magic, demons, etc.)

OK, on to the actual subject of bands... These are not necessarily my Engraved In Stone permanent favorites, but they're the ones that have been consistently favorites of mine, in no particular order, which have bubbled up to the surface of my memory this week:

Penetration -- singer Pauline Murray's voice always struck me as wonderful, and they recorded some absolutely infectious songs, like "Danger Signs," "Come Into The Open," and "Shout Above The Noise."

The Damned -- who knew there could be such a thing as "Bubblegum Punk?" I've been playing "Light At The End Of The Tunnel" in my car, and playing "Smash It Up" over and over, as well as "Love Song," two of my favorites. (Smash It Up is pretty well the definitive Bubblegum Punk song...)

Yaz, Yazoo, Alison Moyet -- Alison Moyet's voice is just sublime, and she's recorded some superlative songs over her career. I watched some YouTube videos of her with Vince Clark, back in the day, and while the hair was comical, the sound just transported me, as it always does. (Then again, Vince Clark had a real talent for finding those singers with phenomenal voices...)

Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, Roy Loney, Translator, Pentangle, P.F.Sloan, Wreckless Eric, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Con'tractions, etc -- just a few names that came to mind this week...

{sigh} I think I feel old now... And I really miss the guys from Translator and the Contractions... {sigh} I guess I better end here, before I wax so nostalgic that someone puts a wick in me...

(Speaking of "Nostalgia," I also loved The Buzzcocks...)
