Well, Xanax helps, but so does... I don't know what you call it, but exposer maybe? The more you force yourself the more you realize its not ever as bad as you anticipate it to be. Maybe try attending functions with the knowledge that "you don't have long to stay". Include a person or two who will help you stay 10 - 15 minutes and then go. And then the next time try staying a little longer. I think proving ourselves wrong about something bad happening is the key to it all. At least it has been to me anyway. I'm not speaking from any type of psychology but just from personal experience.
