I once had a plastic plate in my chin. And like fayero said, when the weather changed, my chin ached. Finally it got so bad I asked them to remove the plate. The doctor said nerve endings had grown between the plate and my bone --- so when it got humid outside and my skin swelled, the plate pressed onto my nerves.
It's a long way to say, yes, the screws are probably the cause of your discomfort. You'll have to weigh the benefits vs. the pain. Ask your doctor most of all.
