Is your son home sick? My son woke up in the middle of the night with a nightmare - I thought surely his fever had risen - but no - he was as cool as a cumcumber (what an odd expression).
I layed down next to him, rub his back and he went back to sleep, woke up @ 6:30 a.m. (yikes!) and declared, "I have to get ready for school today. I have my imagineers class." (A before school engineering class - age appropriate). So I never really checked his forehead after that.
Are you able to stay home with him when he is sick? My son always wants popsicles when he is home, and lots of "Sponge Bob" and "Jimmy Neutron" (double ick).
