How do I get rid of a little ratty friend?

Last night me and the kids were watching tv, whenI heard a gnawing sound coming from INSIDE the wall behind me. We muted the TV, yep, there it was again, this time coming from the ceiling, near to where it joins the wall. It was FREAKY! I went up in the attic with a torch(I live in a bungalow)but nothing moving up there. I looked outside and I could still hear it coming from in the wall. I didnt have a clue what to do so I took the logical option -and decided to ignore it. Later, my daughter went outside to feed her pet rabbit and saw a blinkin RAT crawl under the lip of the render that covers my house and into the wall. Aaaaaarrrrgggghh. What can I do?? The lip goes all the way round the house! I'm too scared to poke around with my hand to see if theres a hole. I couldnt sleep for thinking about it. Plus, I binged on sugar yesterday so I feel sick and headachy today. I am SO creeped out.
