Seriously, I warn people not to get me started because I could just go on and on. How shallow am I? But here it goes. (And BTW, this is all my amateur advice, just my experience and stuff I've read).

How often you wash your hair really depends on your hair type. What damages hair is heat. From the hot water to the hair dryer to the curling (or flattening) iron to lightening it. I wash my hair every other day to spare it some heat damage. During the summer I do switch to everyday though because you just sweat so much here and its gross.

If your hair is especially oily you may have to wash it everyday. But use cool water if you can. Personally I have a love of hot showers (in the winter) so I try to compensate in other ways, like letting it air dry.

I got into the habit of letting my hair air dry when it was really long (I could sit on it). My hair is also really really thick, so it just took too long and was too hot most of the time. I finally cut it, but the no drying thing just stuck. Now I will dry it if I'm especially cold, but I've been known to go out in cold weather with wet hair. (This actually became an incredibly viscous argument between me and my mother. I showed her documentation where it said that you can't get sick from a wet head, you get sick from a virus or infection, but she just wouldn't believe it).

I've been told to use shampoo without sodium lareth sulfate. I think that's the name. There's another ingredient really similar called sodium larel sulfate (I'm not sure on the spelling or the difference between the two). Whether this actually matters or not, the result usually means buying shampoo sold in a salon. I don't know if its true (if someone knows please speak up) but I have personally seen a significant difference in salon shampoos and those sold at the grocery store. And I'm totally the generic queen too. But this is one place I've seen a noticable difference in a more expensive product. Personally I wait for the 'liter sales' that everyone seems to have and stock up.

There is also a product called cholesterol which is an awesome deep conditioner. Actually it has a brand name, but cholesterol is the main ingredient.

Okay I'll quit now.
