No better place to meet members of the opposite sex than school. But you're right. You've got a long time to get to know her as friends. And try to hang out with as many of your classmates as you can while you're at it. It's an opportunity that may or may not come your way again, but take advantage of it.
My husband was my friend for a good year before I had any notion at all of dating him. Sometimes these things are lightning quick, but sometimes you find your life partner slowly as you grow to know each other.
