I'm sceptical about the whole culture of self assertion. I don't want to argue that people should endlessly and submissively put up with things they can't bear, but having said that there's something that really bugs me about people thinking they can satisfy their needs by rationally working out what they have a right to and asking for it, or whatever that assertiveness training stuff tells you to do. No idea why I feel like this. My mother was very unassertive (and very angry); you think I'd have learned something from her.
