OK, this is a general sort of response, not an answer, and I don't claim to any sort of expertise.
First, when I was involuntarily hospitalized after a suicide attempt, I was informed that I couldn't buy a gun for five years. That made sense to me, and I'm in California, where guns are a whole 'nuther story from Virginia. My guess is that seeing a pdoc or a therapist is not what they're looking for -- they're looking at hospitalization, and probably involuntary hospitalization particularly. If you've not be hospitalized, you probably won't come up on any background check as a crazy man. ;-)
And if you're really just wanting to go to the shooting range, how about renting? Many shooting ranges have gun rental, for target practice. Some ranges have classes you can sign up for, that allow you to try a huge range of guns for a reasonable price. If you're just curious about shooting, or about target practice, that might be the way to go.
