My understanding is that they fall through a wormhole into an alternate universe, where they are a lot like sand on the beach...
They go to the same place that matching buttons go.
They go where my favorite earrings went.
In our home, they fall between the wall and the washer -- if I'm very, very careful, I can fish them out, sometimes, with something like a yardstick.
I know, I'm no help. Hope you smiled, though.
