We had a few rats as pets when I was a young kid. I think my oldest brother would get the ones from school to take care of over the summer. As I remember, when they would get a lump, it was pretty certain that they were on their way down. Keep giving her loving care and gentle handling.
We didn't have much luck with small pets like goldfish and turtles. It wasn't until we got a cat that I found out that a pet could live for years.
I think my mom told me that little animals lived faster than bigger ones did - at the time it made sense to me, but I remember worrying that me being littler (the youngest) also meant that I wouldn't last long either!
I don't think she figured I would interpret her words that way...
