I'm sorry that you are going through such hard, sad time right now. I know what it is like to be dependent on alcohol and how alcohol can become a trusted friend (and, yes, it can be so nice to hide behind a good "buzz")
But, what I realized, is that alcohol is nothing more than a fairweather friend, and, with time,
it will turn its back on you, and the comfort
and means of escape that it has provided will be out of reach.

I think you are taking a positive step by seeking the help of an addictions counsellor. You might also want to look into AA meetings where you will meet like-minded people who understand what you are going through and can help you fill some of the void in your life.

And, you are right that continuing to drink while taking an antidepressant is not a good idea. Alcohol is a depressant and drinking while taking an antidepressant can defeat the purpose of taking medication (and, drinking could result in interaction side effects). So, please be careful.

You might also want to visit the Substance Use board here at Psychobabble where you can chat with people who have been through, or are going through, similar problems.

Please take care of yourself. There are people here and out there who care and will want to help you. Its just a matter of reaching out. And, a warm welcome to Psychobabble.

> okay - this is my first post - I just started on effexor 37.5 mg - still not much improvement yet - although I remain hopeful. My big problem is the only "friend" I am truly comfortable with is alcohol. I know it's not good to mix and I'm trying to be good, even going to an addictions counsellor, but when you're so low and overwhelmed, it feels so good to just hide behind a good buzz...anyone else with this issue??
