if you don't want to mediate in a church try looking up something on Transcendental (did i spell that right???) Meditation. they have groups that meet all over the US and maybe other places. in this form of meditation you receive a mantra (a sound) to focus on in your head and it makes the whole thing much easier.maybe that wasn't the point of your post, however.
just thought i would try to be of help :)
