There is an excellent book on that exact subject
written by a woman who believed her "psychosis"
(She detests that label for the reasons you stated) was her subconcsious - in technicolor basically. It's extremely well written, and fascinating. Though I don't agree with all her views on Psychiatry after what she endured I can certainly understand how she came by them.
