When you're 72, friends die, loved ones die (even children) and you can be left alone without wanting it to happen, or doing anything to make it happen. This is a guy who knows what's going to keep him emotionally healthy, he wants to be needed and useful. I think looking at it like he's paying someone to love him is a bit harsh, maybe? Just my two cents, I could've misunderstood.
