On a side note- without being scientific at all, another way to really help yourself in the low times is to surround yourself with support. I have great friends and all, but they can only be my supprt up until the time they stop understanding- when they start saying, "Why would you ever want to end your life? That's silly"

My support is right here on this board. I have learned so much about myself by listening to otheres here. People here only want to listen and be listened too- and everyone does what they can to get you out of your blues with positive feedback, great ideas, and the comfort knowing that you are DEFINITELY not alone in your battle. Everyone is different, but we are all empathetic- we all understand our differences and pains. This really is a wonderful place. I wish pdocs would visit this site ans see the community that everyone has built here to provide such a strong and motivated support group. We have Dr. Bob to thank for allowing us to share so openly.

I'm really considering reaching out to a lot of you to help start a website of our own- not to rival this one at all, but more for the support we find here- peopel here could post profiles and such on a website I built- you can put anything you want down about yourselves, books you love, movies, pictures of those cute doggies! Some place were we can build strong relationships and then converse here. would anyone here be interested in that? If you are, I'm willing to design and maintain it. I would jsut need all of you wonderful people to help give me stuff for the site. it would basically be a "Get to know who you are talking to once you have become a member of the Dr. Bob Social support group" type thing. It would free up Dr. Bob's resources so that we can post easily and quickly here. I'd keep the database for all the profiles and pictures and ANY randomness you'd like. that way there is no overload on Dr. Bob for all of this. I would actually give each of you a whole page if you'd really like to get involved. You could pick a topic to rant on- you could have a pic gallery of your own that you could share with anyone you want. You could choose to have a news article like The Onion does, but maybe it can be all about mental illness. Funny stories, angry rants, your own research.... whatever your little hearts desire- I'd be willing to do it, I would just need enough people that would want to do it to start it- and then I think it would really catch on. It would help us all get to know each other a little better and strengthen our bonds already.

It's somethign I have been thinking about a lot. I think it would be a good project for all of us, and there would be no pressure at all. We all have our times when we just can't do things, and of course that would always be forgiven. So I'm basically saying I need some help, but I will never hound anyone or make anyone feel uncomfortable. I won't monitor cuss words and such, and will make a disclaimer that cuss words are allowed, since many times cuss words need to be spurted out to get our aggressions out. However, if anyone were to be hounding anyone else, I'll step in.

Since we are all pretty much far apart from each other, I think this would be a nice way to virtually tie us closer together.

Anyone dig the idea? Any questions/comments? Anyone think I'm absolutely crazy? :)

What do you think Dr. Bob, having a supplemental website to yours- taking on some of the heavy server-side things like a database for profiles and letting them write news articles (faux or non)- basically a more informal way to let your people communicate once they feel comfortable enough to show off a little. I would OF COURSE, have your link all over the place- because what I ultimately do is attract more people in need to this site- it's so helpful in SO many different, healthy ways- I want to spread the word, and I think I have some tricks up my sleeves to pull it off. I have been designing websites since I was in 8th grade- I taught myself HTML, XML, DHTML, Javascript, Flash, you name it. I think giving us all a creative outlet to say something things that might be offensive (like when people have to rant) or having many pictures or artwork of people. I know there are a lot of good writers on here too. I find that so many people here have unfilling jobs, mostly because their creative sides are never touched. I'd like to give all of these people I have grown to love an outlet like that.

I need a project like this, to tie my web skills and love of helping people through hard times...

Anyone? Thoughts? I'm going to stop with the babble now :)

I've read a lot out there on depression and I may have some info you might need (or just not already know). I've tried those herbal (rip-off) remedies along with clinical antidepressants. Nothing so far has worked for me. However, there's a lot of information out there about depression and what it's believed to be caused from. There's a lot of things I've found out that might cause depression and it might be able to help you. There's also things I have read that might help cure depression.

This could be why people (like me) feel like they were so much happier at a young age. And that might be because we did alot more when we were younger. Another bit that might help you, incase you aren't already aware, stress (especially long-term) causes depression by depleting a lot of the chemicals in your brain that make you happy. So if you can, try not to get worked up about things as much.

Just so whoever's reading this knows, I'm still depressed, so my advice might not be the best you can get, but I've been trying things for a long ass time and I know there's other people out there like me. So if there's something that I might know about that might help you, even though it might not help me...it's worth telling about.
