Mrs. Claus Goes to the Library

Posted by fallsfall on December 6, 2003, at 17:31:19

Last night was quite an event. Mrs. Claus went to the Library. There was a story time with maybe 25 kids. She got to read "The Night Before Christmas". The Children's Librarian read some other stories and they sang some songs (Silent Night, The Christmas Hokey Pokey, The 12 Days of Christmas (complete with hand motions - the partridge in a pear tree had to stand on one foot, Mrs. Claus had a little trouble with that)). Then the children sat on Mrs. Claus' lap and she asked what she could tell Santa they wanted for Christmas. Then she gave them each a Candy Cane. They liked the candy cane most of all. One little boy (age 7?) was quite skeptical and wanted to test Mrs. Claus to verify her authenticity. He asked why Rudolph is always the raindeer who leads Santa's sleigh. Mrs. Claus explained that his nose worked sort of like head lights so that Santa wouldn't get lost so often. He seemed to think that this was a good answer. He also wanted his mother to ask what it is like to be married to Santa. Mrs. Claus said that December was hard because he was working so much and she didn't get to see him as often, but that he was a wonderful man, and she was very glad to be his wife. I think she passed the test. THEN Santa was arriving in a fire engine at the tree lighting ceremony. Mrs. Claus went up to see him (because it was one of the few times in December that she would get to see him). She arrived a little early and talked to some of the children, and had her picture taken with children, families, and a group of 5 Sorority Sisters (they had the best time). One family was going to have to leave before Santa was going to get there because the baby brother was not having a good time. So Mrs. Claus promised to give their message to Santa and gave them a kiss as they went on their way. Finally, Santa showed up, and he was so happy to see Mrs. Claus! He gave her an exuberant hug and her hair fairly flew off her head in her excitement! All was restored in no time, and Santa walked regally to his chair. Mrs. Claus took candy canes in tangled bunches from a paper bag and tried to hand them to Santa one at a time so he could say "Merry Christmas" and hand a candy cane to each of the more than 100 kids. They walked by so quickly and efficiently that Mrs. Claus could barely get the candy canes untangled in time to keep Santa appropriately supplied. He would hold his left hand out and Mrs. Claus would slap a candy can into his palm - just like a nurse would give HER DENTIST a tool during a dental procedure. Somehow, he was better at this technique than she was... She did mention that it seemed like a conflict of interest for him to be giving CANDY CANES to kids, when she knew how much he cared about their TEETH. He did agree. A good time was had by all.

P.S. The costume store called the next morning to tell her that she didn't have to return the costume that morning in the snow storm since she lived so far away - she thought that was awfully nice of them. She dropped it of at UPS.
