Yes, I saw the movie too when it first came out. I'm not sure about the dream interpretation of the ending. I thought that the ending just meant that life goes on (continuous renewal). Perhaps the infected only lived in the area that they were in - even though the radio said otherwise. I took the hello sign as a sign that they never gave up hope.
It was a freaky movie though...
