I have a couple great word origin books here. One says that war prisoners, in lieu of being held in a four-walled jail, were often kept inside an area with drawn borders. Whomever stepped over the outer boundary line was shot, hence the term deadline.
Maybe we can think of a more pleasant word to use at our jobs. No wonder we want to kill ourselves.
