I think sometimes efficiency and streamlining is overvalued. Redundancy helps for the reasons you mentioned--convenience adn accessibiltiy, etc. But redundancy is also important as back up. Airplanes are relatively safe because they have redundnat systems--such as multiple engines. When something goes wrong, having an extra piece of equipment to kick in is really important.
