Adaptation and other films

Posted by noa on January 19, 2003, at 19:15:31

If you are in for a crazy inside/out, what is reality kind of movie, this is it. I loved it but I can see why some of my friends did not. The main caviat is to be warned that while most of the movie is in the quirky and quietly bizarre range, the "third act" is rather more action-packed, tense, and rather disturbing.

As a comparison to other strange but wonderful movies---it is akin to Being John Malkovich (same writer and same director) but much less comical and much more disturbing. And, unlike Memento, which is much more cerebral/cognitive, Adaptation kind of hit me more in the emotional places.

I still liked it, but I know my tastes can be weird (I liked the movie Pi, too, although not nearly as much as this one).

I also recently saw Punch Drunk Love, which I really liked a lot, but other than the one friend who saw it with me, other people told me they hated it. I really liked it--it had such interesting visual effects and sound. The warning for this one would be that there are several times when an element of surprise can make you jump nearly out of your seat (good visual and sound effects there), in case this is an issue for those with bad anxiety. And again, my tastes are a bit quirky--and this movie is very quirky.

Another one I saw recently was Catch Me if You Can, which I thought was very entertaining and beautifully staged, with appealing sets and costumes, etc.
