The Missing Half of the Story:
Do you know about the textbook
called the DSM-IV? It's the bible of
the mental health community -- a
standardized catalogue of
psychological disorders that
psychotherapists use to evaluate and
treat their patients. Surprise! This
ultimate word on the state of the
human psyche names and describes
over 250 pathological states. There's
not a single entry referring to good
mental health. And so, you may ask, is there a
separate and equal manual that
classifies 250 states of good mental
health? Integrity, wisdom, passion,
generosity, ecstatic trance, erotic
bliss? No, there is not. You would
think that shrinks would be mildly
interested not only in fixing what's
wrong with their patients but also
helping them to cultivate what feels
good. But how can that happen if the
feel-good states aren't even named?I propose that we begin amassing the
other half of the story: the 250 states
of emotional wealth and
psychological health. Send your
nomination to THE MISSING
HALF OF THE STORY, c/o
