Tanning for depression?

Posted by Gracie2 on June 15, 2002, at 0:50:43

I know that cooking yourself in a tanning salon is terrible for you. I know that it causes age spots, wrinkles, even skin cancer, and I was never interested in doing that to myself.
Then, a couple of years ago, I had a conversation with a co-worker, who always toasted herself at the fake-bake to a deep golden bronze every summer. I took a big drag off my cigarette and I said, "Ruth, don't you know how bad that is for you?"
She says, "Yeah, I know, but I don't care. Listen, I don't spend a lot of money on clothes or haircuts and I don't wear makeup. This is the ONE THING that I do just for myself, and it makes me feel terrific."
I said, "Because it makes you look good?"
She says, "No, it's not just that. You don't see the effects right away, but it makes you feel good. It relaxes me and puts me in a good mood."

Well, after that conversation, I just had to try it. And she was right, it does me you feel good, just like anything else that's potentially lethal.

I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on WHY it makes you feel good. I don't spend a lot of time outside and there is no natural light in my work environment. In fact, as an x-ray tech, I often work in the dark. So, could it be the light exposure? Does it work like those lightboxes are supposed to help with SAD?
Or maybe it just makes you feel good like a great haircut makes you feel good?
Or maybe there's something about taking off your clothes and listening to music that's invigorating?

Wondering...
