In reply to New cd ALL about mental illness!!!! (yee-ha!), posted by jay on March 10, 2002, at 12:13:09

THE BARD OF DEPRESSION!!!

There's a singer/songwriter out there who Jay and John and Mitch and Sar and other demented poets (I won't even mention the Kid) might be interested in, leading purveyor of rage and heartache aka "sadcore", and, w/ recurring themes of "the hospital bed", need I add, my favorite mental illness rocker, who I haven't brought up 'til now for fear that he might be too intense, (his publishing moniker is I Failed In Life Music inc.)and I don't want to promote something that could do potential damage. But your post, Jay seems like a green light, so I'm throwing caution to the winds, yee-hah indeed, he has helped me so much throughout the years, and has been claimed by other fans as an anti-suicide resource, but again, he's not for the faint-of-heart. I'm such a militant fan that his art has become a deal-breaker in terms of budding friendships, people who I've "let" listen to his albums and didn't respond "right" have fallen off my list of possibilities. Which I now regret, fittingly enough.
I'm speaking of Mark Eitzel, and his former band, the ironically named American Music Club.

Here's one of my favorites among dozens of hair-raising favorites:

"If we sit here, drinking anymore beer we'll be two inflatable dolls in a hooker's bad dream...Gary, I think we wore out our welcome, they want a newer, stronger, cleaner, human being..."

and, one more-

"They say when the light goes out, so does fear, and you only see beauty when it begins to disappear."

He tosses out this shit the way mere mortals toss off a sneeze and w/ the same indifference.

Anyways. Here's a list of song titles to titillate or repudiate, needless to say which category I fall and I do mean fall under:

Some Bartenders Have The Gift of Pardon

The Hopes And Dreams Of Heaven's 10,000 Whores

How Many Six-Packs Does It Take To Screw In A Light?

Now You're Defeated

Gena Rowland's Hair (I kid you not!)

Will You Find Me?

Laughingstock ("The laughingstock proves...that the world... is made of rock...")

I've Been A Mess

Last Harbor (As in "Are you going t be my?")

Apology For An Accident

Everything Is Beautiful("babe,'cept you and me")

Dallas, Airports, Bodybags

Johnny Mathis' Feet (As in "I laid myself at")

I Just Took Two Sleeping Pills And Now I'm Like A Bridegroom Standing At The Altar

The Dead Part of You

Jesus' Hands ("I'm just slipping through Jesus' Hands")

What Godzilla Said To God When His Name Wasn't Found In The Book Of Life

When My Plane Finally Goes Down

Live or Die (as in "nobody cares if I")

As a postscript, after 10 years of servile hero worship I finally got the courage to speak to him in person, he called me sweetheart AND beautiful, ok, said my dress was beautiful, and that he's sorry he disappointed me but he just can't sing the old songs anymore, b/c "I'm insane, I'm kind of insane, and can't live like that anymore, just performing those songs pulls me back into it, and I can't do that to myself anymore..."

His newer songs bear titles like "Move Myself Ahead" and "Bitterness Poisons The Soul" and are kind of corny, but I guess even bards are allowed to grow.

"the first time you show me your true heart I'll be..."
