I think that if distress happens often in therapy, it might be time to switch therapist. I know it's a PITA to tell your life story to yet another person, but therapy only works when you feel better getting out of there.
If it happens from time to time, it's normal. If it's often, then the therapist-client thing is not working.
I had a bad experience once, where the therapist guilted me into sticking with him for 3 more months than when I consider I should have left. I ended up leaving anyway, and nothing productive happened in the extra 3 months.
Try to assess what goes on in there. Make sure you are not taken for a ride, or you don't feel like it is the case.
I hope you feel better soon... don't let this eat at you, it's not worth it.
