TRUTHS

TRUTHS

if someone saves your
life, then you are their
doggie, your life belongs
to them, and you must
walk humble in your
sacred skin, your gift
walks with you and
falls sleepy like
Dorothy in the poppy
as if an opium dream
the gift giver is
blessed with two
lives, so that if one
is dirty, he may throw
it in the launderette
and wear the other
out on a Saturday
night

i took a fish to the
ocean, purchased from
the supermarket as
a cutlet, and i fed
it to the hungry sea
the fish-- that eyeless
pancake sprouted fins
and scales, it grew
dandy into its rebirth
and gulped joyous in
it's waterbed, the
fish thanked me and
knew that it was in
debt, at least of a
token, for it's life,
as true as a pardon
breathed new in it's
beauty-- and as i
bathed my skinny body
in the sea and let
my skin grow salty
i soaked in the
truth that the
fishes knew, that
miracles grow on
trees like figs,
ready to be eaten--
hanging nearly
low enough to grasp
and sometimes you
can do this

you see, if you want
to be reborn, you first
must die, this is
natural, and an easy
thing to accomplish
and when one thing
ends-- something always
begins, this is again
natural and easy and
effortless as the way
the tides ebb and the
leaves fall, sometimes
though you hold on
too tight, and you
get stuck in one life
when this happens you
must be your own
assassin-- you must
stamp out the fire
of your breath and
prepare yourself for
your starry rebirth
you must take off
your old skin and
put it in the
wastebasket

when i was young i
was born in blood, on
my face, and my chest
and the nurses nearly
threw me out without
noticing me, the doctor
a wise and unwise man,
spoke, wait! there is
a babe amongst this
rubbish, stitch him
together so he may
know the joys of a
snow angel, and one
day walk on water
nearly for two
seconds, like a
hat trick-- and let
Pennsylvania open
its arms and take
him, blood and all
into it's gut

if you are bored, you
must rejoice, for you
are not in wartime,
walk outside and suck
in the light of a
sunrise, and if you
look close enough
you will notice that
once in every great
while the sun will
rise in the west and
set in the east
this is a great omen--
it means that the
hunting will be
good-- and the crops
plentiful, and you
will sup on
fawn and God's
good wine

when there is no money
for food, you must
laugh-- for bread and
wine surely do not
grow on trees-- they
must be bought from
your local merchants
for they have families
to feed who hunger
for fat casks of ale
and cigarettes-- sleep
well in your want and
grow skinny for your
deaths will not be
in vain and the lands
of your houses and
your children's lands
will be used to
build new shops full
of trinkets and
coffee

but i was there when
there was no land, and
i saw that the heavens
had not yet been made
and before there were
fountains of water that
would bath you and
replenish you, i was
there, and all the dust
of the world was not yet
settled, still i was
there and the stars had
not yet turned on and i
was there, in the depths
of the great sea, before
there were fishes to be
turned into cutlets i was
there, before there were
birds roaming the skies
looking for a mouse i was
there, and before the apple
was plucked from the sky
in what could only be
described as an honest
mistake, i was there

these truths are sacred
things, and you must keep
them inside of your heart
at night they will give
you good dreams and in
daylight they will shelter
you from harm, but you
must remember this, that
a kiss is the most
sacred thing of all,
you must bless it with
an open mouth, when we
kiss we are devouring
each other-- we hunger
for each other as the sea
hungers for fish, and
we convalesce inside
the kiss like the sick
of the leprosarium,
when Jesus touched
their cheeks with His
little pink
finger.
