Update Discussion on the Terrorist Attack

Posted by Krazy Kat on September 27, 2001, at 14:01:26

I appreciate Noa's thread started to discuss how this has affected us personally, internally because that does seem to be the best thing to share here. I've pulled back because I don't want to cause any riffs - this board is so important to me. But I really wish we could have a fair and open debate about it all - we're all caught in the middle of "what's going to happen next" now - free floating anxiety everywhere.

I would hope we can keep a few things in mind:

1. Those who are flag wavers or bearers or whatever, aren't all vengeful people. I have a flag. It's a way of showing unity right now. I don't want the women and children in Afghanistan to suffer (anymore than they do). But I am going to support my country. So, this sterotype of folks driving around in their pickups with flags on their hoods, thinking up horrific things to do to Arabs needs to go.

2. We have to stand behind the Arabs and Afghanis in this country. This is another way to unify. In Ft. Collins, CO, the mosque has been holding services with other churches, including an evangelical one, standing outside for protection. Fallwell and Robertson? Horrible people. My parents are evangelicals - they're not horrible.

3. President Bush is our President. I didn't vote for him. He's doing his best. There is so much we don't know. So much negotiating going on we don't know about. Very crassly said, he's going to what he thinks is best and then do what makes him look best. Killing many innocents isn't going to do that.

4. This affects all of us, all over the nation, all over the world. Decorum seems to be missing more and more. Disagree with the President and his aids, but be respectful. Honor those who were killed. Don't read sensational stories about them. Let them rest in peace. Be aware of others' problems pertaining to this (but then, we're all overly sensitive here).

So we must hope that there will be a way to target the people who attacked us. And to put a stop to this, worldwide.

Because it is a world issue. Not just an American one.

I got in an argument re: terrorism in Britain previously here and how it is different. Of course, I want that to stop. I have no idea how to accomplish that, though. Perhaps a change in the way we handle terrorism will lead to a solution for that as well. I hope so.

We often try to remain open, especially those of who have suffered in some way, been classified as "different" in some way. Well, let's keep in mind that all Americans aren't full of hate and looking to perform in a John Wayne movie. They're frightened, and concerned for their children; they're reevaluating their priorities; they're losing jobs (my husband lost his) and living in complete uncertainty.

We need to stand together. Opinions may differ, but ultimately, we're from the same tribe.

- K.
