Not quite. The Board of Education for the state of Kansas, my actual homestate by one mile (I live virtually on the Missouri/Kansas state line) ended the state mandated, compulsory teaching of evolutionary science and left it up to each local school board on what to teach. Since that time, all but one of the members of that board who voted that way (it was something like a 5 to 4 vote) have been soundly voted out of office. Additionally, very few (less than 5) local school boards actually removed the teaching of evolutionary science from the curriculm. Kansas became the national joke of the month when this all happened. But you do not need to fear -- it is not that bad yet. Even with a conservative U.S. Supreme Court, you are not going to get state mandated teaching of creationism any time soon.
