You are right. We ARE the study in many, many cases. Some of those trials don't seem to go beyond 6 weeks or months.....I've been on meds for years.
It is a tradeoff some people are willing to make. I have a few unpleasant side effects with my current cocktail, and I've been on meds that tossed me around like a rag doll. I traded my breathtakingly severe and paralyzing depression for the hope that meds would make a difference. After a goodly amount of trial and error, I seem to be much better now.
I never planned to go to the hospital, but if I need to be there I will go. Very little of this experience is all or nothing...taking meds=going to the hospital sooner or later. It's all pretty much gray, and we will all have our own unique experiences. I wouldn't worry about the hospital until that one is coming down the pike.

It seemed to me that a overwhelming number of posters who were/are medicated, treated going off 2 the hosp. as though it was a trip to the corner store,(PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE!!!!). Like a regular every day occurance. I'm concerned that this is the fate that lies ahead for ALL those who chose to use medication as an aid in treatment for mental illness?!? I'm beginning 2 feel like a darn guinea human for drug companies here...I want to feel "normal" again, but at what risk/sacrifice? Paxil really did a number on me. I was in better shape w/o the paxil. Now we're teasting the waters with Effexor. No one really knows the long term effects (side effects) these newer drugs have on people. WE ARE THE STUDY! Sorry for rambling here...having a bad day. I hope I haven't insulted anyone by voicing my thoughts.

Some do better taken out of their environment, some need a supportive environment, some behaviors like cutting or eating disorders are (in some) difficult to stop. They may need a controled setting to stop self ingury. Some are a danger to themselves and others.
