A group where people can, for example describe their family of origin, discuss how it impacted their life—that type of thing. Or post about efforts to reduce social isolation and connect with people—what is and isn’t working for them, the obstacles and feelings they’re dealing with as they try to do this, etc. They would then get feedback and support from others in the group for whatever issues they chose to discuss.

Something less formal than therapy but still with some consistency—where the same people will post over a period of time (in addition to new people).

I’m wondering if a business would lend the use of one of their meeting rooms after hours as a community service for something like this? I don’t think churches would be open to it because there won’t be a spiritual component, as there is with 12-step groups, for example, with their emphasis on a “higher power.” I have heard that churches aren’t open to allowing other types of groups use their space—does anyone know if this is true?

Dear Calla,
Yes, some churches can be a very
restrictive, but there are some that
allow non-spiritual groups to assemble
in their church.

As far as finding as finding a support
group, you might want to try:

Good luck,
Glenn
