Some other on-line chat sites on depression...

Posted by dj on February 2, 2001, at 15:53:01

Just came across this, while seeking something else from the newsletter, linked below... Haven't checked out some of these chat areas, however they may be of interest to some here. I did glance at Dr. Koops sites but they are in the process of being redone:

"Let’s Chat

One web site devoted to chat is www.support-group.com. In its own words: “Support-Group.com allows people with health, personal, and relationship issues to share their experiences through Bulletin Boards & Online Chat and provides links to support-related information on the internet.” It currently has four regularly scheduled chat groups related to depression and bipolar disorder (all times in this article Eastern Time):

Sunday 8 p.m.: Bipolar Significant Other
Monday 8:30 p.m.: Living with Bipolar Disorder
Tuesday 9 p.m.: Depression Chat
Friday 8:30 p.m.: Bipolar Disorder Chat
You first have to sign up with them and receive a chat user ID, which they refer to as a nickname.

On the Talkcity web site (www.talkcity.com), you can chat about just about anything. The site can be intimidating, a good place to start is their calendar of what's going on now. Although they prefer you register, you can chat as a guest without registering. As of February, 2000 they have these depression related chats:

Monday 6 p.m. Bi-Polar support
Wednesday 7 p.m. Depression & Spirituality which discusses the warning signs of depression, when and where to seek professional help, and when to ride out the storm.
Friday 9 p.m. Living Through Depression
Friday 10 p.m. Depression or The Blues? where the topics include manic depression, chronic depression, anxiety attacks, and schizophrenia.
C. Everett Koop, M.D., the former U. S. Surgeon General, has a web site devoted to health. Chats related to mental health are listed at http://go.drkoop.com/community/chat/mental.asp and include many that are mood-disorder-related; you must register before chatting.

Sunday 7:30 p.m.: Facts and Feelings About Suicide
Monday 11 a.m.: TLC: Talking, Laughing and Coping with Depression
Tuesday 3:30 p.m.: The Mouse Ride, a support group about the wide mood swings that can accompany bipolar disorder
Tuesday 5 p.m.: Depression Management, a support group focusing on managing and changing the thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with depression
Tuesday 8 p.m.: Mood Disorders, a support group for those dealing with bipolar disease, depression, SAD, postpartum depression
Tuesday 10 p.m.: Depression, a discussion group about recognizing and coping with the signs of depression, its causes and what to do about it
Wednesday 8 p.m.: Dealing With Severe Mental Illness, a support group for those coping with bi-polar disorders, psychotic episodes, major depression and schizophrenia
Wednesday 10 p.m.: Living Well While Managing Depression, a support group for those suffering from depression
Thursday 7 p.m.: Depression: Discussion and Discovery, a support group for those who are willing to talk about and explore new ways to recover and heal from depression.
Thursday 11 p.m.: Dealing With Depression, an open support and discussion group for dealing with depression in yourself or a loved one
Thursday 11 p.m.: Adolescent Depression, discussion to help parents spot this very common illness in their children
Friday 10 p.m. Depression, a discussion group about recognizing and coping with the signs of depression, its causes and what to do about it"
