There is an old expression to the effect: If you love someone/thing let them/it free, if it comes back it was always yours, if not it never was.
You are not being silly in not wanting to let her go, but if you hold on too tight it will make her want her independence from you even stronger. Her request for space indicates to me she is not comfortable making it too serious at this time in her life. She wants to explore other parts of her life and possibly other relationships too, which means you should too.
Hopefully you can maintain a special friendship.
