Joining ANYTHING has to help. Stuff you are interested in would be best...like a political group, an environmental group, animal rights group, church group, whatever interests you. Then you'd find guys of like mind. Heck, take your laundry to a different laudromat each week! :-)

I have found the nicest folks work at our local health food co-op. All volunteers who get a discount for working, mostly vegetarians, mostly broke like me...we have lots in common!
