He's not dumb and if you hang in there with him he'll figure out what is the truth about his mom.
My kids both decided that they would have a more stable life living with me when they turned old enough to choose (about 13 in my state - not a law, a convention). A parent putting down the other parent is so destructive, the kid is torn between trying to believe one parent and needing to defend the other.
I hope that this situation improves some day for you and your son's sake.
