manic, can you try other shops? just to check out their atmosphere?
that one might just be located is a "less desireable" side of town? (regarding the clientelle)also, a friend of mine has many tatoo's (he too has bipolar and BAD OCD), and he is really freaky about the cleanliness issue.
anyway, the place he goes to does open up everything new infront of you if you ask. the only thing he uses with everyone is the tatooing device (don't know what that's called)
but like you mentioned, the needle, the colors, gloves, all that is new for you.so i guess what i'm saying is 1) make sure they have no problem with opening new infront of you and 2)check out several shops regarding their 'atmosphere'. there are also some artists that do 'work on the side' where they might come to your home or do an 'afterhours' kinda thing.
