Hi Dinah,
I'm not a doc but one thought is that he's got DVT (deep vein thrombosis.) This would account for getting the venous ultrasound, the swelling and also blood tests. I think they test blood to see if you have a genetic predisposition and also to see if your clotting factors are normal. I believe it's quite serious if the clot moves to the lungs especially.
Again, hard to say but this popped into my head when I read your post.
