Back to that safe place

Posted by annierose on December 11, 2006, at 17:40:22

The board has been quiet lately so I thought I share a good story.

I have had a stressful year. And the parts that I have control over (construction in our home, and job move) are behind me now. Relationship with my husband is still in flux, but we have settled into a decent living routine (not hostile).

During this time I have had hard and difficult sessions with my therapist. At times I felt that she wasn't on my side or understood what I was conveying. At worse, I felt she was pushing me away.

Now, we have worked through that angst and we are back to our safe and cozy place. After a moment's pause today, I asked her, "So now what are we going to talk about?". She laughed and asked, "Whatever is on your mind." I told her that I want her to lead the session for a change and ask me questions. The exchange felt comfortable. I like her and I'm glad I get to work out all this junk with her.

I think part of my anger towards her was valid. Therapists have lives and bad days and say things that can be misunderstood by a very attuned listening set of ears. I forget she is human.

I am glad she is in my corner. It feels good.
