I think you should not try to be good. You should try to be more natural at like what you really are. And other than certain things, like rules which cannot be broken and mild pleasantness and cooperativeness, it generally is good to be what you really are, and if what you really are is good, then that is what is good. Trying to be good artificially in the hope of getting something doesn't work out that well.
