I think the idea is 'supportive' rather than 'exploratory'. That is that they support you with your day to day issues by listening and offering more practical advice etc rather than 'digging for dirt' in your past.

It is typically 'brief supportive' to contrast with 'exploratory' which can take something like 7-10 years...

Transference is discouraged rather than encouraged.

So the 'power balance' should seem more equal. Even though they are typically more directive. Yup.
