Cynicism and Fear

Posted by Sigismund on July 9, 2007, at 20:11:28

Two doctors were recently detained/held here (as you say these days, certainly not arrested) in relation to the bombing at Glasgow Airport.

These were the headlines in the Murdoch press
WEB OF TERROR REACHES HOME
TERROR LINK ON OUR DOORSTEP
OATH OF EVIL, and
TERROR DOCTORS

Killer Doctors!
Quite like old times.
(It would be interesting to know the headlines in Pravda in 52.)
You never feel sure with the Murdoch press if there is a line between cynicism and vulgarity.

In "Good Night and Good Luck" the James Morrow character says something like 'We are not the descendants of fearful men', with the implication that we have become fearful.
Demonisation is necessary to prevent consideration of the facts, and further, to obscure the cynicism that lead to the demonisation and the grab for cynical advantage.
So are we frightened of?
Our own reflection, our own conscience?
