I don't know that one uses bran for its nutrients. Germ is nutritional. Bran is fiber. If I recall correctly, oat bran had more effect than did wheat bran, on a gram for gram basis.

Bran contains a lot of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber holds great quantities of water, via hydrogen bonding. For each gram of soluble fiber, up to around 200 grams of water might be held. It keeps feces moist, and easier to pass.

There may be effects of minor constituents of different brans, but I haven't really looked into that aspect. But if you wanna, I will.
