Writers Festival

Posted by Sigismund on July 30, 2007, at 2:16:24

Richard Flannigan was talking about being at a Californian writers festival on a panel with Annie Proulx, among others. The subject was research for fiction. Annie Proulx went first. She said she interviewed people, created data bases, retrieved original manuscripts, spoke to anyone and lots I've forgotten. When his turn came up, RF said that he said this....
'I'm from Australia. We don't bloody well do anything. I just make it up each morning.'
And there were 3000 Americans and none of them laughed.

It wasn't perhaps quite true, but we laughed anyway.

You should have seen Robert Dessaix though. Absolutely amazing. Real psychological truth. It is a pity that his writing does not convey what his presence does. He spoke about his book (partly on Turgenev) "Twilight of Love".
