My book update!

Posted by NikkiT2 on April 29, 2004, at 12:32:32

Woah.. I've missed so much here.. thats fantastic - its always great to see so much input on this board.. *grins* I'll have alot of catching up to do aswell!

Well, Lots of books this time.. as many as I can remember anyway!

So.. books I read on holiday..

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" by Mark haddon. I read this on the journey - all from the persective of a 15 year old boy with Aspergers.. a MUST read for anyone with an interest in Aspergers, or anyone who wants to try and understand better.. a great insight.

"The Magus" by John Fowles. Wow! It was a reccomendation from someone here ages ago.. and wow.. I adored this book, and it sparked up so much conversation.. everyone I met that had read it loved it. very strange.. about messing with peoples heads.. but a great read. When I left I donated all my books to the little library an English woman runs near where we stay, and she was so excited to have this book!!

next I read a series of 3 books (the fourth is out now and I bought it today) by Alexander McCall Smith. A guy we spoke to at the "his Dark Materials" play reccomended them to us as a light fun read.. and they certainly were that. I read one a day, they wer elight and easy, but really enjoyable. They are "The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency", "Tears of the Giraffe" and "Morality for Beautiful Girls". Today I bought "The Kalahari Typing School for Men".

There was "Kingdom of Fear: Loathsome Secrets of a Star-crossed Child in the Final Days of the American Century" by Hunter S. Thompson. very.. Hunter S. Thompson.. I enjoyed it alot though and it gave me some brain exercise!

"Frank Skinner Autobiography" by Frank Skinner was a very suprising read. He is a famous commedian in the UK, but the book is suprisingly well written and very very funny! This had been one of those "hand around" books that had been read about 10 times before us, so was so falling apart.. then it was great looking for the right person to hand it on to!!

"Vernon God Little" by DBC Pierre was good.. I found it strange, and I think J enjoyed it more than me. It wasn't what I expected at all.

"Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" by Tom Robbins. I was really dissapointed with this.. another that was passed onto us.. I love the film, and have even read the screen play.. and the first half of the book was great.. but it just siddenly died and I haven't even finished it.. which is something I *never* do..

"Forget You Had a Daughter: Doing Time in the Bangkok Hilton" was the obligatory read about Sandra Groegory's jail time in the infamous Bangkok Hilton.. a read Thailand traveller read.. but.. wow.. very eye opening and well written. You really felt for her as she never asked forgiveness and always admitted she'd been wroong. But her story is really eye opening.

I'm sure there were more.. I just can't remember now!! Its terrible *laughing*

Anyway, today I bought, "My Invented Country: A Memoir" by Isabel Allende.. I adore her books, and have desperately waiting for this to come out in paper back (it hurts my hands to much to read hard backs so I try and wait for paperbacks!) for so long.. I'm so excited about reading it!!
And "A Leap of Faith: Memoir of an Unexpected Life" by Queen Noor of Jordan.. the story of an Arab American woman who married King Hussein of Jordan.. I'm into memoirs at the moment!!
Oh, and then theres the "The Kalahari Typing School for Men" I mentioned earlier!!!

Now to catch up on all these posts!!!
