In reply to lithium orotate anyone, posted by linkadge on January 19, 2015, at 17:49:01

Linkadge,

I tried lithium orotate about three months ago along with my regular regimen of Abilify, niacin, and vitamin D3. As the case has been with a lot of supplements that I've tried, I noticed what seemed to be some benefits from the lithium orotate (mainly improvements in my energy and concentration, but also a peaceful tranquil feeling without feeling too tired or sedated), but they didn't last for longer than 2-3 days. I took 2.5 mg of the mineral salt (I think that 2.5 mg is the amount of "elemental lithium" that I took), and I would have tried higher doses if it weren't for the fact that I noticed a bit of an increase in my sound hallucinations at the 2.5-mg dose that I tried.

So, I probably didn't take enough lithium orotate for long enough to allow me to draw any meaningful conclusions from my trial. I also think that the response pattern that I seemed to notice from lithium orotate may not be representative of the response patterns that others will have from taking the mineral salt. It seemed to be the case with me for a while that whenever I'd introduce a new chemical to my body, it would seem to improve my energy and concentration for a finite period of time before seemingly losing its effectiveness. As far as I can tell, most people don't seem to respond to supplements in this manner, so I definitely wouldn't assume that just because I responded to lithium orotate in the way that I did that you'll respond in the same way.

As an aside, I took lithium carbonate from 2003 to 2005 along with Wellbutrin and seemed to derive a slight benefit from it, at least at first. I don't, however, generally speak fondly of my experience with lithium carbonate because the tremor and agitation that I noticed while taking the mineral salt didn't seem to go away after I discontinued it. This may have been due to the fact that the generic version of lithium that I was taking was eventually recalled due to the product possibly being subpotent or superpotent. But at any rate, it was because I derived at least some benefit from lithium carbonate initially that I decided to try lithium orotate.

Even though I probably can't draw any meaningful conclusions from my lithium orotate trial, I will say that it might be possible that those with classic presentations of bipolar disorder might be more likely to respond more favorably to the mineral salt than I did (although I'm basing what I'm saying on the fact that lithium carbonate is a proven bipolar disorder treatment, and the same may not necessarily apply to lithium orotate). I think I'm currently diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, although my psychiatrist hasn't discussed my diagnosis in some time, and I sometimes think that either schizotypal personality disorder with persistent depressive disorder or mixed-state bipolar disorder with psychotic features might be more fitting diagnoses for me. Still, to the extent that there might be some bipolarity to my illness, I wouldn't say that I have a classic presentation of bipolar symptoms, which consequently wouldn't seem to make me a likely responder to any form of lithium.

Anyway, that's my long-winded account of my experience with lithium orotate. Hopefully others will chime in any share their experiences, as well. Take care, Linkadge.
