Essential Fatty Acids/Depression

I have had good success with EFAs for depression. The best known for this are the omega-3 fatty acids such as fish and flax oil. I find fish oil to work the best. In some cases, omega-6 fatty acids are essential for some people, the best sources being borage oil, evening primrose oil, or black currant oil. Personally, I get the best benefit from borage oil as it has the highest GLA content. I find that a balance of omega-3s and omega-6s is essential for my depression. I like a 1:1 ratio. For example, I take 1,500mg of fish oil and 1,300mg of borage oil in the morning. Through experimentation, I have found that taking them together can be helpful, but the best result I have received is to first take the fish oil, wait about 20minutes, then take the borage oil. You don't want to wait too long, but taking them together may result in less of an effect as they may compete with each other. I don't know if this is true or not. Some people do well on either fish oil or borage oil, but I find that a balance of the two makes me feel better. The buzz right now is about fish oil, but some people also require omega-6s for depression. You can experiment with either or both. Also, I discovered that initially, when I started taking borage oil, I needed two capsules per day, but after awhile, you will need to decrease the daily dosage. With fish oil, I always recommend trying a low dosage first. In the beginning, you may need more per day, but then after awhile, you may find that you do all right on a lower dosage. This has been my experience.
